Support for people bereaved or affected by someone’s suicide

To be bereaved by suicide is devastating. There is support out there for people bereaved or impacted by someone’s suicide.

Some of the support is aimed specifically at suicide bereavement while some is more generalist. This resource is divided into bereavement support for adults, support for parents facing the death of a child and support for children and young people facing bereavement.

A good place to start is Help is at Hand which lists organisations which provide information and support. It also goes through what to expect in the period after a suicide such as what happens in a coroner’s court. It also gives information about how to look after yourself through the shock and trauma following suicide of a family member or friend.

Help is at Hand (PDF, 2.8MB)

The information below is largely summarised from Help is at Hand. Most of the organisations listed below are national but have support groups reasonably close to Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge. Some offer online and/or telephone contact. If you require specialist mental health help during this difficult time have a chat with GP who will be able to refer you to services that can support you.

The main aim of this information page is to underline the fact that you need not journey alone, others can befriend and help support you during bereavement. Please do not be afraid to ask for help.

While this page is accurate at time of development please check with the organisations listed for updated information.
