Evacuation

Helpful advice on what to do and expect during an evacuation as a result of a local incident.

During an emergency

If an emergency happens:

  • go in
  • stay in
  • tune in

Unless it is dangerous to do so, stay where you are and keep informed of the situation. If there is a major incident, radio and TV programmes will be interrupted to bring you up-to-date information and instructions.

These suggestions are made for guidance only - always follow the instructions of the emergency services during an emergency.

Knowing how you and your family would get out of the house in a fire could save lives.

For more information please follow the advice on the London Fire Brigade’s fire safety at home page, particularly if you live in a purpose-built maisonette or block of flats

Evacuation checklist

If you have to leave your home:

  • listen to the advice of the emergency services
  • collect your emergency grab bag (see below) and make sure it contains everything on the checklist
  • check you have your keys, wallet and phone
  • grab some warm clothing to change into
  • make sure you secure your home properly
