End your tenancy

Information on ending a tenancy and moving out

End your tenancy

You must be named on your tenancy to end it. If it is a joint tenancy only 1 named tenant is required to end the tenancy. It is important to note that in the case of joint tenancies that one tenant can end the tenancy on behalf of both thereby bringing the tenancy to an end.

You will need to have your rent account number with you to complete the end-of-tenancy form. Your 8 to 14-digit number can be found on your rent barcoded letter, rent card or letter from rent collection.

We will be in contact after the form is completed to complete the end of tenancy, please note that four weeks' notice is required.

Ending a tenancy on behalf of someone

If the tenant is no longer able to terminate the tenancy, we'll accept notice from somebody to do so on behalf of the tenant, for example, someone with power of attorney.

You will need the tenant's rent account number with you to complete the form. The 8 to 14-digit number can be found on the tenant's rent barcoded letter, rent card or letter from rent collection.

Moving Out

Tenants must give four calendar weeks written notice of intention to move out and sign a Notice to Quit (tenant to landlord). If you are transferring from one Barking and Dagenham council property to another, the notice period is not required.

Be prepared

You are expected to move out of your old property and into the new property on the same day to avoid being charged rent on both properties. This is particularly important if you receive Housing Benefit, as this will not be paid for the same claimant at two different properties at the same time.

Always get confirmation from your Housing Officer about which date your tenancy needs to end, in order to ensure that the four weeks’ notice has been given.

It is your responsibility to make sure that rent and any other tenancy charges are paid up to the last day of your tenancy.

Please make sure that the property is empty, including any lofts or outbuildings before returning the keys.

You must return the keys before the tenancy end date. No matter the date agreed, the tenancy will remain open, and you will be charged until you return the keys.
