central park Dagenham illegal encampment
An illegal traveller encampment was moved within two hours of appearing in one of the borough’s parks, in the latest example of Barking and Dagenham Council putting its powers to use.
Seven caravans and vehicles appeared in Dagenham’s Central Park in the early hours of Friday morning (8 June).
The offenders were issued with an enforcement notice ordering them to vacate the site or risk being arrested – within two hours they had left.
In October last year the council secured an injunction at the High Court banning illegal campsites from being set up at a number of designated sites across the borough, including parks, open spaces, schools, and industrial sites. It also prohibits fly-tipping.
Another fine example of the council effectively enforcing its powers
Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, Councillor Margaret Mullane, said it was yet another demonstration why the powers were needed.
Cllr Mullane said: “This is another fine example of the council effectively enforcing its powers to keep our borough protected from illegal encampments that can cause misery for residents and businesses.
“We hope this sends a strong message to those who think they are above the law that Barking and Dagenham won’t hesitate to take action.”
The council has already used its powers seven times this year to tackle illegal encampments.
