The latest tool in clamping down on anti-social behaviour was unveiled yesterday at Dagenham Heathway.

A Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) is now in operation around the station and the shopping centre, extending down to the junction of Ripple Road and New Road, and as far as Old Dagenham Park. 

The new powers prohibit anyone from causing anti-social behaviour such as spitting, harassment, drinking alcohol in the street or begging.

Offenders caught breaking the rules can be issued with a £100 fixed penalty notice but could face a maximum fine of up to £1,000.

Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, Councillor Margaret Mullane, said the PSPO was introduced after listening to residents’ concerns – 97 per cent of people who took part in a public consultation in April backed the introduction of the new powers.

Cllr Mullane said: “We know this isn’t going to be an instant fix and we know there will be more work to do in solving the problems in the area, but this is another important tool in tackling anti-social behaviour and improving enforcement in our borough.”

The PSPO, which began yesterday (Monday 3 September), will last for three years. 

The council has already introduced similar powers around Broad Street, Choats Road, and Barking town centre in a bid to curb anti-social behaviour.
