The winners of the inaugural Street Tag competition in Barking and Dagenham have bagged themselves £1,000 worth of bicycles.
Al Noor, a team of four friends and two of their children, upped the ante and decided to try and cover 1,000 miles during the six-week game, which turned the streets of the borough into a giant walking, running or cycling challenge, to raise money for charity.
Sylvia Sielicka, Shormin Begum, Erum Rashid, and Yasim Sattar braved wind, rain and snow – even completing the 4.2-mile course in -2C conditions.
In total, 69 teams and 176 people took part in the game, which ended on 11 March, covering over 3,300 miles.
Small changes really can add up to big things
Councillor Maureen Worby, Cabinet Member for Social Care and Health Integration, said: “I am thrilled at how many people got involved in Street Tag and have taken a step to leading a healthier life.
“The game has shown you don’t need an expensive gym membership or to be Mo Farah to get fit. Making small changes really can add up to big things.”
There were also prizes for The Three Generations, The Du Toit’s and The Baileys, who finished in second, third and fourth place respectively.
Cllr Worby added: “The game has proved a great success and we hope to expand the scheme over the summer to encourage people to get out and about.”
