In partnership with The Alzheimer’s Society, Barking and Dagenham Council hosted an action day to raise awareness and highlight the support available locally to help people with dementia.
The event which took place Monday 20 May in Barking Town Square included an array of information stalls, interactive activity and live entertainment, including information on how to become a ‘Dementia Friend’
This year dementia action week is focusing on tackling loneliness and isolation associated with dementia. Alzheimer’s Society’s research shows that many people are worried about ‘saying the wrong thing’ to people living with dementia. And despite almost all of us knowing someone affected, two-thirds of people living with dementia report feeling isolated and lonely.
By becoming a Dementia Friend you can learn more about how it affects people and the kind of actions that you can easily do to help and make a world of difference to someone with dementia.
Chatting to someone with dementia, doing a sponsored walk, showing patience in a checkout queue – every action, big and small, adds up.
Cllr Maureen Worby cabinet member for Health and Social Care Integration said: “Events such as today’s action day are a great way of helping to raise awareness about the range of support available in Barking and Dagenham for people suffering from dementia.
“Initiatives like Dementia Friends, which anyone can sign up to, help people to understand that little things like a friendly face or a listening ear can make a huge difference to someone suffering with Dementia”.
