Company ordered to pay costs of £2,500 for illegal street trading

A company that was caught street trading without a license in Barking and Dagenham has been ordered to pay £2,500.

Mr David Sonowo and Mr Darren Olawale, Directors of Inside Success Union, Stockwell have also been banned from street trading in the borough.

On Wednesday 25 July 2018, Council Enforcement Officers witnessed a group of 15 to 20 youths trying to sell magazines to members of the public in Barking Town Centre. The youths were working for Inside Success Union.

Officers advised the company directors that they needed a Street Trading Licence to sell goods or services on a street and issued a Fixed Penalty Notice for unlicensed street trading. Despite this, the group continued to trade in Barking Town Centre.

Following a trial on Thursday 3 January 2019 at Romford County Court, Inside Success Union, Mr David Sonowo and Mr Darren Olawale were prohibited from street trading in the borough for one year and ordered to pay £2,500 in costs to the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.

We’re determined to stamp out the actions of people who undermine our valued businesses and traders.

Councillor Margaret Mullane, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, said the council will continue to target those who flout the law.

“We’re determined to stamp out the actions of people who undermine our valued businesses and traders. We know residents are concerned about rogue traders and we’ll continue to look out for anyone breaking the rules. We won’t hesitate to prosecute any traders found doing this.”

“We welcome businesses in our borough, but they have to respect our community and act in a manner that is socially responsible.”
