Council issues 28 grime crime fines as part of street clean up

Council enforcement officers have issued 28 fines as part of ongoing work to clean up Sunningdale Avenue in Barking.

The enforcement operation took place after residents fed back that people were regularly dumping rubbish and littering the street.

Sunningdale Avenue is located within a Public Service Protection Order (PSPO) area which puts restrictions in place to control behaviour that will affect a local community’s quality of life. Residents also reported that anti-social behaviour, including public drinking, was taking place on the street.

The council issued 28 grime crime fines in Sunningdale Avenue, Barking including:

  • 22 £150 fines for fly-tipping
  • 4 £75 fines for littering offences
  • 2 £100 fines for urinating in public, which is a breach of the PSPO

24 fines were issued to residents who lived in Sunningdale Avenue, and four fines were issued to business and residents who lived in the surrounding roads. 26 of the 28 fines have currently been paid to the council.

"Officers cracked down hard on these enviro-criminals and the fines send a strong message to the offenders: we won’t tolerate this in our borough.”

Councillor Margaret Mullane, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “Fly-tipping, littering and anti-social behaviour blights local neighbourhoods. Residents who live in and around Sunningdale Avenue told us they were fed up of the selfish people who were spoiling their street for others.

“Officers responded by cracking down hard on these enviro-criminals and the fines send a strong message to the offenders: we won’t tolerate this in our borough. We will continue to work hard and listen to our residents to make our streets safer and cleaner.”
