A wannabe ‘Del Boy’ has been found guilty in court for selling counterfeit designer clothes at Dagenham Sunday Market.

Kane Steven McCarthy of Rose Lane, Romford was sentenced last week (Wednesday 4 December) at Snaresbrook Crown Court for selling fake clothes and was ordered to pay £4,440.40 for proceeds of crime, fined £500 and charged £1000 in costs.

Mr. McCarthy was caught selling the goods at the east London market by Barking and Dagenham Council enforcement officers on 17 December 2017 and originally pleaded guilty at Barkingside Magistrates Court on 26 April 2019 before the case was then sent to the Crown Court.

Andy Opie, Operational Director for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “This was a planned operation that has resulted in a fantastic outcome and a step in the right direction to protect our residents and other consumers who visit our markets.

“We welcome businesses in the borough, but they must operate within the rules and act in a manner that is socially acceptable. Any business thinking of selling fake goods in Barking and Dagenham needs to think again as we won’t allow it and you will be prosecuted.”

In total, the trading standards officers seized 436 items of clothing bearing the “Ralph Lauren” and “Nike” trademarks including jumpers, t-shirts and tracksuits. On inspection, the goods were found to be of a very low standard.
