St Awdry’s Green in Barking has been transformed from a hotspot for anti-social behaviour into a communal garden, thanks to the efforts of local residents who have been working to revitalise the once unloved green space.
People from across the borough have come together to collaborate with the council and Every One Every Day – an organisation who work with residents to make their community projects a reality.
The communal green by Wedderburn Road and St Awdry’s Road has undergone a wholesale revamp to create the Westbury Community Space, after residents cleared rubbish and landscaped the area.
This work has been continuing for a number of months, culminating with the second of two open days on Saturday 30 March from 2pm.
The community space’s previous open day was a great success, involving planter building and the creation of a ‘bug hotel’.
Anyone wishing to get involved in the project can still do so, with residents being invited to take part in a tree planting session at the event this Saturday. Simply turn up and get stuck in!
Councillor Saima Ashraf, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Community Leadership and Engagement, has congratulated the residents on their efforts:
“The transformation of St Awdry’s Green really is unbelievable and I am absolutely delighted by the outcome,” she said.
“This is a wonderful example of people from across Barking and Dagenham coming together as one borough and one community, and I hope that even more residents will head down to the Westbury Community Space on Saturday to help out.”
