A dodgy clothes dealer has been fined by Barking and Dagenham Council for selling counterfeit designer clothes in Dagenham Market.

Mr Timothy Hallam of Crocus Fields, Saffron Walden, pleaded guilty at Barking Magistrates, on Friday 31 January 2020, for trying to flog fake goods at the east London market. 

Mr Hallam was caught selling the counterfeit goods by council enforcement officers on 17 June 2018 and pleaded guilty despite saying he believed his stock was genuine. 

Councillor Margaret Mullane, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “We want to protect our residents when they visit our markets, and this includes saving them from traders selling fake goods. 

“We will not tolerate rogue traders or businesses operating in our borough and we will continue to investigate any leads and plan operations to enforce on people just like this.” 

In total, council officers seized 368 items of counterfeit children’s clothing bearing the North Face, Adidas, Moncler, Ralph Lauren, Stone Island and Versace trademarks. 

Mr Hallam claimed to have purchased the goods from an unknown supplier and failed to make any checks to see if the seized items were genuine. As a result he was ordered to pay a fine of £250, a £30 victim surcharge and £1500 in costs to the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham under the Trade Marks Act 1994, S.92(1).
