Council’s new street cleaning equipment clean sweep

As part of Barking and Dagenham Council’s commitment to keeping the borough clean and free of litter, the council has invested in 30 new street cleansing barrows.

The new barrows will replace older equipment which has been around for years, and they have been fully kitted out with new equipment to clean effectively, including brooms, litter pickers, scrapers, clapper boards, shovels, and first aid kits.

In addition, the council has invested in more electric and mechanical sweepers. An extra three electric sweepers will help clean town centres and shopping parades, while an additional four mechanical sweepers have been brought into the service to clean the borough’s road network.

In recent months, our frontline street cleansing staff have been working harder than ever to keep the borough at its best during these difficult times. We’ve invested in this equipment as a show of our ongoing commitment to keeping the borough clean.

Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Public Realm, said: “Clean and tidy streets are a top priority for our borough.  In recent months, our frontline street cleansing staff have been working harder than ever to keep the borough at its best during these difficult times.

“We’ve invested in this equipment as a show of our ongoing commitment to keeping the borough clean.

“Residents, businesses and visitors can help us by making sure they put items in the correct bins and using litter bins in our streets and parks, or taking their litter home.

“They can also help by disposing of kitchen appliances using our free AO white goods collection service, visiting the Frizlands Lane tip, or ordering a bulky waste collection to properly remove larger items.”

This is the first part of the council’s wider investment in new cleansing equipment, which will also include a fleet of new caged tipper vehicles to safely take away large items of waste. Staff will also be given new electric blowers to trial to help them clear litter and waste from between and underneath parked cars in residential roads. We are confident you will continue to see improvements in your area in the future.
