Dagenham school creates thoughtful display for Remembrance Day

Dagenham Park CofE School has created a stunning display as part of a whole school Remembrance Day project.

Staff and pupils made 963 poppies to create a wonderful four-metre high structure to commemorate those who lost their lives during the wars. Pupils learned the meaning behind different colours of poppies and included these in the display to honour all members of the community.

The school also rose above the challenges presented by Covid safety measures, to come together virtually on Armistice day. They live-streamed a service on YouTube which featured a speech from the headteacher, the sounding of the Last Post to introduce a two-minutes' silence and poems read by some year 11 pupils.

Headteacher, Chris Ash, said: "Despite the difficult circumstances we find ourselves in as a school community at this present time, it has been wonderful to see the school come together as part of this project.

"Through the use of technology, we were all able to come together to pay our respects."

Councillor Carpenter, Barking and Dagenham's Cabinet Member for School Improvement and Educational Attainment, said: "It's important for us as a community to remember those who sacrificed their lives for our freedoms.

"I applaud Dagenham Park CofE School for their creativity in coming together on Armistice Day and for creating a beautifully poignant display to honour the fallen."
