Joseph Gill, an 8-year-old Southwood Primary School student, has won the prestigious Panathlon ‘Primary Outstanding Achievement Award.’

Joe, who suffered a brain injury shortly after birth due to contracting meningitis has been recognised for his tenacity and good attitude in the face of adversity.

“He has learnt independent skills such as changing into his kit, remembering his own equipment and following instructions for each activity.”

Joe’s grandparents have been greatly surprised by the progress he has made since he started taking part in the events, commenting that they fully support his participation in them.

Councillor Evelyn Carpenter, Cabinet Member for Educational Attainment and Improvement, said: “I’m so pleased to see that Joe has won this award; it’s fully deserved.”

“Joe’s life hasn’t been easy, but to see how his memory has improved by taking part in these Panathlon events and all the while with a smile on his face has been nothing short of inspiring.”
