During these unsettling times there are some people who, unfortunately, may try and make a quick profit out of the vulnerable.
Council trading standards officers have become aware of a number of coronavirus related scams that are currently taking place across the country and things that residents, especially the vulnerable need to look out for.
While you’re keeping yourself busy at home make sure you keep a watch out for the following scams:
- People trying to sell virus testing kits – these are only given out by the NHS
- Vaccines or miracle cures – there are no miracle cures
- Businesses selling overpriced or fake goods to protect you from coronavirus, such as hand sanitisers
- People offering shopping, medical or cleaning services.
Unless you have something arranged through your local authority or the NHS, do not agree to it.
To stop yourself becoming a victim of scammers, make sure you always check who is at the door before opening, ask for ID and never agree to anything that you don’t believe is legitimate.
If you’re concerned about a trader or individual displaying suspicious behaviour, you can report them to tradingstandards@lbbd.gov.uk.
Councillor Margaret Mullane, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “Despite this being a public health crisis, there are a very small minority of people that try and take advantage of our most vulnerable.
“These scammers are clever and manipulative, but don’t fall for their tricks. If you’re concerned about a certain individual, report them to the council’s trading standards team.
“The vast majority of businesses have been very supportive of the local community, and I thank all of those residents so far who have stepped forward to help us find those few who are looking to take advantage. We are showing that together we will get through this.”
