Barking and Dagenham Council enforcement officers turned into Sherlock Holmes this week as their investigative skills helped them track down two fly tipping offenders.
On the evening of Thursday 27 July, the east London council’s CCTV recorded a driver and passenger of a white Ford transit box van dumping rubbish out of the back of the vehicle onto a public highway.
Unfortunately, the CCTV camera didn’t manage to catch the vehicle’s registration but did capture a company logo on the van and after some searching online, the officers found the company and where they were based – Forest Gate in east London.
The officers then paid the company a visit on Monday 3 August and with assistance from management at the company, the officers were able to identify the offenders. Both the driver and passenger were interviewed under caution where they admitted the offence of fly tipping and were issued with £400 Fixed Penalty Notices.
Councillor Margaret Mullane, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “Our enforcement officers are not letting up and will do everything they can to catch the people dumping rubbish in our borough’s streets.
“In this case the officers used their initiative to catch the offenders and I would like to thank them for their hard work.”
The offenders were advised that if the penalties remain unpaid, they will each be prosecuted for an offence contrary to s.33 EPA 1990 with a maximum unlimited fine and criminal record if found guilty.
