Good news for Barking and Dagenham residents: they can now recycle more items, making it easier to get green at home.

Previously, residents could recycle the following items in their brown bin: 

•    paper and thin card

•    plastic bottles, cans and tins, and thick cardboard

Residents can now also recycle the following items in their brown bin: 

• glass bottles and jars
• paperback books (please remove any plastic sleeves)
• hardback books (please separate the pages from the cover and place these separately in the bin, also removing any plastic sleeves)
• mixed plastics such as yogurt pots and margarine tubs (when rinsed)
• empty aerosol cans and clean aluminium foil

Residents who live in flats with blue Eurobins can now also put these additional items into their blue Eurobins.

Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Public Realm, said: “Following a successful pilot last year, I’m delighted to have rolled out an extended recycling scheme for all Barking and Dagenham households. 

“We have always been committed to recycling as much as we can, and our extended recycling offer now makes it easier for all residents to recycle more at home. I know lots of residents wanted to be able to recycle bottles, books and more plastic items and now they can do so in their brown bins, freeing up more space in their grey bins for general waste items.”

The extended recycling scheme follows a test pilot in Barking’s Leftley Estate, which involved nearly 3,000 residents and ran from 14 September to 21 December 2020.
