The Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, Cllr Darren Rodwell has lent his voice to the Mayor of London’s ‘London Refugee Response’ fund, which will be a way for more people to make donations to help refugees build a new life in London.
The Appeal, administered by the London Refugee Foundation has been set up with leadership from the Mayor of London, London Councils and charitable funders from across capital to give Londoners a way to provide much needed support to new arrivals from Afghanistan (and potentially refugees and people seeking asylum from other countries living in London).
Cllr Rodwell said: “Barking and Dagenham like councils up and down the country is responding to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Afghanistan and is helping to support families fleeing persecution.
“Ours is a welcoming borough and we have a proud history of supporting the most disadvantaged in our communities.
“We continue to work with our partners locally across both the statutory and voluntary sectors as well as our residents to offer support to as many families as we can, while managing existing pressures and priorities for the council.
“A number of our residents have contacted me directly wishing to do something for the families coming to our city. Right now, the best way to help is to join this London-wide effort.”
