Pupils in year 5 at James Cambell Primary School in Dagenham presented an assembly to their parents and special guest Councillor Edna Fergus, Her Worshipful, The Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, to celebrate Black History Month.

 

The children told the story of how attitudes to race in sport have changed over time and explained how taking the knee has become a powerful symbol. They also spoke of the discrimination that black footballers and tennis players have faced and celebrated their great achievements.

 

The children wowed the audience with powerful storytelling and renditions of Bob Marley's 'Redemption Song' and Stevie Wonder and Paul McCarney's 'Ebony and Ivory.'

The children in year 5 have made us all really proud and reminded us that equality is something we cannot take for granted. 

The finale to the assembly was a particular highlight, as children re-enacted how athletes Barshim and Tamberi shared the high jump gold medal at this year's Olympics. The heart-warming performance was a fantastic tribute to the harmony and equality shown by the athletes in Tokyo.

 

Headteacher, Joe Wilson, said: "The children in year 5 have made us all really proud and reminded us that equality is something we cannot take for granted."

 

The Mayor thanked the children and told them how much she had enjoyed their assembly. Speaking to the audience, Councillor Edna Fergus said: "We have many events taking place across Barking and Dagenham to celebrate Black History Month.

 

"It is really important that we do this so that we can learn about one another, understand the past much better, tell the stories that have been hidden and hear how we can build a more fair and equal future together."

Councillor Evelyn Carpenter, Cabinet Member for Educational Attainment and School Improvement, said: “Black History Month provides us all the opportunity to learn about important events and people.

 “I applaud the efforts of the children and staff at James Cambell School to share this special assembly with parents.”
