As Albania marks 110 years of Independence today (28 November), a flag raising event to mark the occasion was led by the local Albanian community outside Barking Town Hall.
The council and community came together for speeches and performances, and were also joined by representatives from the Albanian and Kosovan Embassies.
Councillor Saima Ashraf, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Community Leadership and Engagement, said: “Albania has a very rich and proud history and we’re so pleased to be able to mark the occasion with the local community amongst a spectacular sea of black and red Albanian flags outside of the town hall today.
“We have a wonderfully diverse borough and are truly grateful for moments like today, where we can really appreciate togetherness and just how much our communities contribute to the borough.
“I’d like to thank the Shpresa Programme who year on year organise such a wonderful event as part of the council’s Donate a flag initiative.
Albanian Independence Day, which is held on Nov. 28, commemorates the country’s revolt from the Ottoman Empire in 1912.
