East London council launches Inclusive Digital Zones to bridge digital access

Barking and Dagenham Council has launched Inclusive Digital Zones at the two of its main libraries to help remove some of the barriers to digital technology many people with disabilities face.

The zones, based in Barking Learning Centre and Dagenham Learning Centre, are equipped with cutting-edge technology, including screen readers, magnification software, and speech recognition tools. They have been carefully designed to include features such as accessible seating and adjustable desks, as well as volunteer digital champions who can offer support to those who need help getting online.

In a move towards promoting inclusivity and accessibility, these innovative zones aim to enhance library facilities to ensure that they are more accessible to all members of the community, regardless of their age, abilities, or digital literacy. It also provides a space to help residents with disabilities access services and opportunities that are now mostly accessible online.

Councillor Saima Ashraf, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Community Leadership and Engagement, said: “I’m so pleased to announce the launch of our Inclusive Digital Zones as part of our wider digital inclusion plans to ensure no-one is left behind.

“As the world becomes more and more digital, it’s so important that residents of all ages and abilities are able to get online without any barriers.

“We want to ensure residents feel confident in the knowledge that the right tools, training and support is available on their doorstep.”

The Inclusive Digital Zones have been made possible through a partnership and in consultation with The Royal National Institute of Blind People and the Good Things Foundation.

As part of the council’s drive to improve access to online services for everyone living in the borough, residents can also benefit from a range of other initiatives including six months of free mobile data, free computer courses and a laptop borrowing service for over 65’s.
