Residents of Barking and Dagenham are being warned about doorstep traders and to not be caught by something that sounds too good to be true (it probably is).

Trading Standards Officers from Barking and Dagenham Council have seen a slight increase in doorstep crime when it comes to dodgy traders, especially roofers.

An officer from the Trading Standards team has warned that:

‘It starts with knock at the door and a cheaper than normal quote for small works like guttering or loose tiles, but then escalates to bigger works and threats to get money out of people to do work that does not need doing in the first place.’

Officers want to ensure that residents are not caught out by these chancer ‘traders’ and are providing tips on how to avoid them:

• Don’t engage with doorstep callers and don’t answer the door to anybody you are not expecting.
• Don’t deal on the doorstep, if stopped while out, simply say “NO thank you” and carry on walking, if the traders are persistent, call the police.
• Seek help from Trading Standards, they have specialist officers trained to deal with doorstep callers
• Get a door chain if you are vulnerable
• Work with Trading Standards, the Police and your local community by reporting suspicious activity or vehicles in the area.

Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “Unfortunately there are people out there out to make a quick buck and con people out of their hard-earned money, especially elderly and vulnerable residents. We won’t stand for this, and we will take action if we catch anyone.

“I’d encourage all residents to be vigilant and keep an eye out for their friends, neighbours and family. If you’re concerned about something or someone, please do report it.”
