The owner of a Silver Seat Leon has been ordered to pay a huge fine after they were caught dropping a cigarette on the floor by Barking and Dagenham Council Environmental Enforcement Officers.
The offence took place on 17 October 2022 on Wood Lane, Dagenham with the driver throwing a cigarette out of the window and making no attempt to pick it up.
Following further investigation, it was discovered that the vehicle belonged to a Miss Nadya Choudhury of Dukes Court, Newham and she confirmed that she was driving at the time of the offence. As a result, she was issued with £150 Fixed Penalty Notice as an opportunity to discharge liability from prosecution.
However, Miss Choudhury failed to pay the fine and the case was taken to court.
The case was heard at Barkingside Magistrates Court on Tuesday 11 July and Miss Choudhury pleaded guilty to the offence explaining that she didn’t pay the fine because of postal issues.
The judge ordered her to pay a fine of £150, costs to Barking and Dagenham Council of £284 and a Victim Surcharge of £60, totalling £494.
Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “We simply won’t stand for people making a mess of our streets and we will always take enforcement action if we catch someone.
“This woman could have thought twice about dropping her cigarette and even offered to pay up the initial fine, but it has now cost her hundreds of pounds. I hope she has learnt her lesson.”
