A Tower Hamlets resident who was caught dropping a cigarette on the floor from the window of a rented car has been found guilty in court.
Enforcement officers from Barking and Dagenham Council saw the driver of a Porche Panamera discard their cigarette while driving along Green Lane, Dagenham on Friday 21 April, this year.
Following investigations, DVLA records showed that the vehicle was registered to a hire company, and they were issued with an enforcement notice to provide information on who was driving the vehicle at the time of the offence.
The company confirmed that it was Mr. Mohammed Rahman of Old Castle Street, Tower Hamlets.
On the 12 May, Mr Rahman was issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice and was given 14 days to pay the fine. However, despite a reminder letter Mr Rahman didn’t pay and was summoned to court.
The case took place at Barkingside Magistrates Court on Tuesday 28 November and Mr Rahman was found guilty in his absence. He was ordered to pay a fine of £440, costs to Barking and Dagenham Council of £596 and a Victim Surcharge of £176, totalling £1,212.
Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “We won’t stand for littering in our borough and we will always take action.
“Dropping his cigarette from his rented car has resulted in him paying an expensive fine.”
