Barking and Dagenham top in London for awarding young people first preference secondary school

Over three quarters of young people in Barking and Dagenham will attend their first preference secondary school from September this year.

Figures show that out of 3443 applications, 2841 (82.47per cent) of 10 and 11-year-olds have been offered their first preference, far exceeding the capital’s average of 70.66 per cent, and outperforming every other London borough.

Councillor Elizabeth Kangethe, Cabinet Member for Educational Attainment and School Improvement, said:

“I am delighted to see that Barking and Dagenham continues to provide most of our youth with a spot in their first-preference secondary school. “

“Witnessing the contentment of both young individuals and their parents as they gear up for this significant advancement in their education, within one of their preferred options, is genuinely fulfilling. I couldn't be prouder.”

“I extend my gratitude to the dedicated School Admissions staff for their continued efforts and hard work”

For those who missed out on their first preference, the borough also performed above the London-wide average for top three preferences. 95per cent of applicants in the borough received an offer on a school in their top three, compared to 90 per cent London-wide.

Overall, 97 percent of applicants in the borough have been offered one of their preferences compared with the London average of 95per cent.
