A couple in Dagenham have been fined for failing to comply with planning regulations after constructing an unsightly extension that did not conform to approved plans.
In September 2016, Ruzhdi and Mariglerta Gjeta purchased an end-of-terrace property in Calverley Crescent, Dagenham, and in 2018 they successfully applied to build a two-story extension.
However, in November 2019, following a neighbour's complaint, Planning Enforcement Officers visited the site and found that the extension did not conform to the approved plans and was unsightly.
A Breach of Condition Notice was issued, requiring the development to be modified to comply with the approval. A retrospective application to retain the extension was refused, and an Enforcement Notice was served in June 2020, requiring the extension's removal. Despite an appeal and further applications, the extension remained in place beyond the deadline of 1 September 2021.
In March 2022, Enforcement Officers noted that the extension was still in situ, leading to further legal proceedings. The Gjetas pleaded not guilty but eventually changed their pleas to guilty at Romford Magistrates’ Court on 12 November 2024. They were each fined £1,400, with additional costs of £1,500 and a Victim Surcharge of £140.
Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “Adhering to planning regulations is important for maintaining the look and feel of local areas. We will continue to enforce to make sure that all developments meet the required standards and everyone follows the rules."
