PSPO consultation

Last chance to take part in antisocial behaviour consultation

Residents and businesses of Barking and Dagenham are being encouraged to take part in the council’s Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) consultation before it closes.

PSPOs allow local authorities to prohibit certain activities in specific areas to tackle antisocial behaviour.

There are three PSPO locations up for renewal in Barking Town Centre, Dagenham Heathway and Broad Street plus the proposal of a new one in Gale Street.

The council is suggesting including the use of amplified noise equipment without prior consent and not limited to but including approaching women and making unwanted inappropriate sexual comments (also known catcalling) across all PSPOs.

Activities currently banned include:

  1. Consumption of alcohol in a public place
  2. Public urination
  3. Spitting
  4. Aggressive begging
  5. Groups engaging in behaviours which cause residents and other users of the area harassment, nuisance, alarm or distress.

So far, over 1,000 people have taken part in the consultation.

The consultation closes on Sunday 30 June and can be accessed on the council’s website.
