Residents encouraged to have their say on the East London Joint Waste Plan

Consultation opens on policy which will determine how waste is strategically managed in East London

From Monday 29 July to Monday 16 September 2024 Barking and Dagenham, Havering, Newham, and Redbridge will be consulting on the draft East London Joint Waste Plan. The Plan will set out how waste should be managed in East London until 2041.

The draft Plan provides the strategic vision, objectives and policies for the sustainable management of waste in East London. It will also help ensure that there continues to be enough capacity to manage waste in East London and that waste facilities are located in the right areas to reduce the impact on local communities and the natural environment. The Plan also contains policies on how developers should consider the management of waste during demolition and construction of buildings, and when a development is occupied. The new East London Joint Waste Plan will cover the period to 2041.

The Plan helps the East London boroughs make decisions such as:

  • Making sure waste sites are well designed, so that they minimise environmental impacts and don’t cause amenity issues for neighbours
  • Protecting existing waste sites, including those that help make sure waste is diverted from landfill wherever possible
  • Releasing existing waste sites from safeguarding where they are poorly located or under-used, or where there are land use tensions with the boroughs respective Local Plans.

Critically, the East London Joint Waste Plan seeks to significantly reduce waste production overall in East London – keeping materials in use for as long as possible, and then re-using or recycling them – leaving a minimum of residual waste which needs to be disposed.

The policies in the East London Joint Waste Plan embed the principles of the circular economy and will assist in meeting the household recycling target of between 35 and 50% for East London by 2030.
