You’re hired – borough's first ‘Reverse Jobs Fair’ proves a success

A new scheme by Barking and Dagenham Council is helping people with learning disabilities, autism and long-term health conditions into work. 

The first ever ‘Reverse Jobs Fair’, where jobseekers were able to showcase their skills and experience to potential employers, was held recently at the Barking Learning Centre and Community Hub. 

11 candidates took part in the pilot event. They received prior support from the council’s Local Supported Employment Programme which looks to help those with disabilities gain employment. They worked on making their own stalls which advertised their skills to the would-be employers. 

Following the event, three job offers were made. 

Cllr Sade Bright, Cabinet Member for Employment, Skills and Aspiration, said: “We want to help break down any of the barriers that get in the way of people who want to work. 

“By running events like the Reverse Jobs Fair, where employers actually come and talk to people who may struggle in a traditional interview setting – we want to show that we’ll help people overcome any difficulty if they want to get into work.” 

Companies taking part included Network Rail, Skillnet, Everyone Active, McDonalds, the council and more.
