This February marks the 20th anniversary of LGBT+ History Month, and Barking and Dagenham Council is proud to join the nationwide celebration under the theme "Activism and Social Change." This theme underscores the pivotal role that LGBT+ individuals have played in advocating for and achieving social progress, benefiting not only the LGBT+ community but society as a whole.
The month launches with the LGBT+ flag flying above Barking Town Hall for the entire month. The activities are then launched in style on Friday 7 February with the ‘Being Visible’ launch party, an exciting event celebrating queer visibility in Barking & Dagenham at Galleon Arts Centre.
Other highlights from the programme include film screenings, writing workshops, and open mic nights. The entire programme can be viewed here.
Councillor Sade Bright, Cabinet Member for Employment, Skills, and Aspiration, expressed her support for the month's activities: "LGBT+ History Month is a time to reflect on the history of the LGBT+ rights movements and their campaign and struggle for equal rights. This year's theme, 'Activism and Social Change,' resonates deeply as we acknowledge the strides made towards equality and the ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive world. It’s important to remember those who suffered and sacrificed to progress equal rights.”
“I encourage all residents to participate in the fantastic events planned throughout the month and to continue fostering a community where everyone feels valued and respected. For more details about the programme and to get involved, please visit the council's official page."
Join us in celebrating two decades of progress, unity, and the unwavering spirit of activism that defines LGBT+ History Month.
