Keeping your Child Safe in Out of School settings

Extra-curricular activities

Are you thinking of signing your child up to an extra-curricular activity such as additional tuition, sports of social club?

Many parents choose to supplement their child’s education and development. For some this means getting a private tutor to help with Math’s and English, for others, it can mean an after School club, religious studies or weekend sports activity. For most children, it is an enriching experience which boosts learning, self-esteem and enjoyment. The most important thing is knowing that your child is in safe, capable hands throughout this process.

The Choosing a Club Guidance for Parents Leaflet (PDF, 475.54 KB) will aim to provide you with some tips and points to consider when choosing tutors or an out of school group activity for your child.

Guidance for Parents and Carers on Choosing Safe Out‑of-School Settings (PDF, 439.12 KB)

This government guidance can help you choose a safe out‑of-school-setting for your child.

It includes:

  • Questions that you may want to ask a provider to ensure
  • that they are providing a safe environment for your child
  • Red flags to look out for when you visit a setting
  • Checklists of positive signs that suggest a safer setting

The guidance for parents and carers sits alongside a code of practice for providers, which lays out the minimum level of safeguarding practice providers should have in place to reduce the risk of harm to children in clubs, tuition or community-led activities.
