Car Clubs in Barking and Dagenham

Car clubs provide a cleaner, modern, and more reliable way of travelling sustainably by car for those trips you cannot do using public transport, cycling, or walking. They offer the convenience of a car without the cost of privately owning one.

Car club benefits

Using a car club means you don’t have to worry about tax, insurance, parking permits, servicing, or repairs. There are none of the hassles of owning and maintaining a car.

We have teamed up with Enterprise and Zipcar to increase opportunities for everyone in the borough to travel by cleaner and greener modes.

Using a car club means that you could:

  • save money - if you drive less than 6-8,000 miles per year, giving up your car and switching to a car club can save you on average £3,500 a year
  • travel smart - fuel and insurance are included in the low hourly and daily rates, and you won’t have to organise car tax. Some car clubs are also set up so that you don’t need to pay the Congestion Charge
  • never have to worry about parking - with designated parking bays available, they are a convenient option for all. Each car has its own dedicated bay where you will pick up and return your vehicle. They are placed in areas where they are easily accessible for residents and businesses
  • reserve and go - just reserve online, unlock a car in your neighbourhood with your membership card, and drive. Using a car club is quick and easy. You can find, book, and unlock vehicles all via mobile apps. Car club vehicles can also be collected and returned 24/7 using a contactless payment card that you tap on the windscreen. Some providers also allow members to book by the minute, so you can use a car for as little as 30 minutes or as long as six months
  • reduce your carbon footprint - each car club vehicle aims to remove 20 privately-owned vehicles from the road, meaning reduced emissions and fewer parked cars. You can also choose an electric vehicle to reduce your carbon footprint even further
  • benefit from a variety of vehicle types - choose from a wide range of vehicles to suit your needs

How does the car club work?

At the moment, there is only one type of car club in Barking and Dagenham, Back to Base car clubs.

This type of car club offers vehicles which have dedicated on-street car club parking, so you are always guaranteed a space. These spaces are designated with the wording ‘Car Club Only’. You just return the vehicle to its original parking bay when you’ve finished.

Back to Base car club bays are enforced by our civil enforcement officers. The location of the bays has been selected so as many people in the borough as possible can have access to a car club vehicle.

How to join

Both Enterprise and Zipcar Car Club operate in Barking and Dagenham and using the services is really easy. You just need to join, reserve and go.

As a member, you will be able to book a car online ahead of time. You can find, book, and unlock vehicles all via mobile apps. Some providers also allow you to use a contactless payment card to unlock a vehicle.
