ACCOMODATION FOR TENANTS

The following advice has been provided by Block Management UK regarding the insurance position for tenants:

  1. The insurance policy will only cover tenants’ alternative accommodation, if your tenancy agreement specifically states that you are entitled to it.
  2. You will need to follow up with your landlord/letting agent directly to confirm if this is the case, as Block Management UK are not part of your tenancy. We have also informed your landlord and asked them or their letting agent to liaise with you on this matter, but we recommend that you contact them immediately.
  3. We have to be clear that unfortunately if your tenancy agreement does not state that you are entitled to alternative accommodation, you will not be covered and will not receive any reimbursement/funds from the insurer, please understand that this is out of our control, and we have no involvement in the placing of the insurance policy at this site.

What support is available if my tenancy agreement does not cover alternative accommodation?

  • Speak to your landlord about what help they can offer. This may be the return of any deposit you paid when your tenancy started which you can use to secure further accommodation or helping you with alternative accommodation if they have other properties
  • If you are homeless, you can contact Barking and Dagenham Council on 020 8724 8323, Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm, or email housingadviceservice@lbbd.gov.uk. In an emergency outside of working hours call 0208 215 3000.

What help can I expect from the council?

  1. Any help with accommodation from the council will be in-line with the duties we have under homelessness legislation. We can only help people eligible for housing assistance who are homeless through this route. More advice about eligibility and homelessness can be found here.
  2. The assistance we are able to provide will depend on your individual circumstances.  Most homeless people who are helped by the council are assisted into private rented accommodation. More information about our homelessness service can be found here.
  3. Accessing social housing is a different process and more information about this can be found here. Waiting times for social housing are often years, so this is not an option to resolve homelessness now.
