National Careers Service
Available online, through advisers on the telephone and, face to face in the community. You can get access to independent, professional advice on careers, skills and training including:
- writing your CV
- identifying your key strengths and skills
- understanding the job market
- searching and applying for jobs
- interview techniques
- searching for courses and training schemes
- finding funding to support learning
- finding out about volunteering opportunities to help you develop work skills
- exploring career options
- choosing training routes.

Jobcentre Plus
Jobcentre Plus provides a wide range of information and services about helping people to find a job, access to loans or grants and unemployment benefits for those entitled to them.
It advertises job vacancies you can access through job points (touch-screen computer terminals available in all jobcentres) and via Jobsearch.
Work clubs
Children centres in Barking and Dagenham are now providing work clubs.
The work club will give you the chance to meet others looking for work, build new contacts, share job hunting experiences and get advice on interview techniques, CVs and even volunteering opportunities.
Our work clubs aim to help:
- you make the most of local knowledge
- unemployed people in their communities get jobs
- empower local communities
- encourage people to work together
- offer additional support to the unemployed
The work clubs are open from Monday to Friday at your local children’s centre.
