Dagenham cosmetics store fined for selling illegal skin bleaching products

The owners of R&T Cosmetics beauty store, based on Dagenham Heathway, have been fined more than £14,500 for selling ‘dangerous’ skin-whitening cosmetics. 



Trading Standards officers from Barking and Dagenham Council visited the premises in May 2017 and seized 360 products, including some products containing hydroquinone, a skin-bleaching substance banned from over-the-counter sale in the UK. 



The labels on the substances failed to meet strict EU regulations and, in some instances, listed incorrect ingredients.

Borough’s young people get a taste of working life

Students from Eastbury Community School recently ventured out into the working world as they took on a two-week work experience placement.

Nearly 300 Year 10 pupils took part in the work experience programme which saw them going to a number of different industries ranging from: administration, education, construction, legal, banking, pharmaceutical, property, accountancy, retail and manufacturing.

The offer is available exclusively to Barking and Dagenham residents till the end of June 2019 – offering an annual saving of £228* in comparison to what the Big Six are offering as an equivalent.

Beam energy provides electricity that is 100% renewable, sourced from UK-based wind and solar generators, so residents can save money on their bills whilst saving the planet at the same time.

The next two weeks mark Fostering Fortnight and Barking and Dagenham’s fostering team are looking for experienced foster carers and also new applicants to join their team to help make a difference to the lives of our borough’s children.

Business fined over £1,600 for failing to provide waste removal documents

A Dagenham business has been fined a total of £1,668 for failing to provide records that showed how it disposed of its waste. 

During a routine trade waste inspection in July 2018, council officers visited a car repair shop at Unit 6a, VW House, Selinas Lane in Dagenham. Officers came across a large amount of waste including car parts, gas bottles and overflowing trade waste bins and identified that the waste belonged to the car repair shop.

Community Food Club
Volunteers needed for new community food clubs

Two more community food clubs are set to open in the Mark’s Gate and Alibon areas of the borough following a successful pilot at the William Bellamy Children’s Centre which opened last October.

 

The community food club allows its members access to £20 worth of groceries per visit for a membership fee of £3.50.

Sydney Russell sixth form students visit 10 Downing Street

A group of young people put their political hats on last week, as they were given a tour of Number 10 Downing Street.

 

The visit was arranged by a former Sydney Russell student and the pupils felt extremely lucky that they were able to visit the heart of government at such an important time in British political history.

Dagenham man hit with £1,839 fine and costs for noise nuisance

A Dagenham resident has been given a £1,839 fine for holding an excessively loud, late night party.

 

Following a complaint on the evening of Saturday 8 September 2018, a council officer attended and heard excessively loud music coming from a large marquee in the back garden of 165 Lichfield Road, Dagenham. High levels of bass were bouncing off the houses on the opposite side of the street.

Crackdown on gangmasters in Hertford Road, Barking

Council enforcement officers and the Police have carried out a major operation to clamp down on contractors illegally employing unskilled labourers in and around Hertford Road in Barking.

The joint operation which took place over 10 days in March and April 2019, also tackled anti-social behaviour, including fly-tipping, littering and urinating in public. In addition, officers carried out focused work to clean up the area.

The operation involved council officers, the Police, Immigration Officers, the HM Revenue and Customs and resulted in:

Barking Folk Festival
Full line-up to Barking Folk Festival revealed

With under two months to go, the full line up for the Barking Folk Festival has been announced. 

 

The two-day, weekend festival taking place at Abbey Green and the Abbey Ruins will be headlined by Dreadzone on Saturday 8 June and Afro Celt Sound System on the Sunday. 

 

Other fans favourites such as Beans on Toast, Will Varley, Quiet Loner, The Demon Barbers XL, Worry Dolls and TalkingDRUM will also be taking to the stage alongside others.
