Property Licensing

Search the Public Register

Checking whether a property is licensed is simple and helps ensure rental properties in Barking and Dagenham meet legal and safety standards.

The Housing Act 2004 requires all local authorities to maintain a public register of licensed properties. This includes details of any Temporary Exemption Notices or Interim/Final Management Orders that have been issued. You can search the register to view all licences issued under Barking and Dagenham's property licensing schemes.

Tenant Advice

As a tenant, checking your landlord's licensing status can protect your rights and ensure your home is safe and legally compliant.

  • For prospective tenants: Before signing a tenancy agreement or licence to occupy, check that your landlord is licensed. This helps ensure your tenancy complies with the law and protects you from potential issues.
  • For current tenants:
    • If you believe your landlord isn't complying with their licence conditions, report your concerns via our Dealing with Problems in Private Properties page.
    • If your landlord is operating without a licence, they may face fines and enforcement action.
    • It is unlawful for an unlicensed landlord to serve a Section 21 'no-fault' eviction notice, as the property has been let illegally.

Report an unlicensed property

If you suspect a property is unlicensed, you can report it by emailing PRPL@lbbd.gov.uk. The identities of informants will be protected.
