Statutory requirements

It is a statutory requirement of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 that all lead local flood authorities publish a local flood risk management strategy (Section 9, sub-section 7). Barking and Dagenham is the lead local flood authority for its municipality.

Aims of the strategy

The key aim of the local flood risk management strategy is to set out a long-term vision to reduce the likelihood and detrimental consequences of flooding.

The strategy provides support and direction for local residents, businesses and other stakeholders to better understand the risks of flooding, and offers best practice advice in the steps they can take to reduce the risk of flooding.

Development of the strategy

The strategy was produced through a working group, which included internal council services and key stakeholders including the Environment Agency, Thames Water and our neighbouring boroughs, Redbridge and Havering. It also included a public consultation.

Summary

This outlines the impacts of the strategy as well as highlighting how it can help residents and businesses to reduce flood risk.

Strategic Flood Risk Assessment

The Strategic Flood Risk Assessment (SFRA) is a statutory document required under the NPPF (National Planning Policy Framework) to inform the preparation of the Local Plan, planning decisions and the design of development within the borough. It is a source of technical information for the local flood risk management strategy. The SFRA Level 1 and Level 2 reports 2017 are available on the Local Plan review page, under the evidence base.
