Barking restaurant closed for business for Covid breach

Barking and Dagenham Council has ordered a local restaurant to close its doors after enforcement officers discovered during a routine inspection that it was breaking Covid rules.



Sweet London of 62a Longbridge Road, Barking was visited by officers on Friday 23 April observed 25-30 customers congregating in a wooden structure, sharing Shisha and food.

Barking and Dagenham Council and police join forces for day of action

In a bid to combat antisocial behaviour in Barking Town Centre, council enforcement officers and the police teamed up to patrol key hot spots.



The day of action saw council officers and the police split up in three groups and deployed to the Abbey Ruins, East Street, Fishnet Roundabout and other surrounding areas. 



Throughout the day, two patrols took place from 2 to 3.30pm and 4 to 5.30pm at all three locations.

Council grants Honorary Freedom of the Borough to trade union activist, Managing Director of the Council, 60's pop star and former professional footballer

As part of an online Council Assembly meeting last night (27 April), the new Mayor, Her Worshipful, Cllr Edna Fergus was on hand to award four very special people with the Freedom of the Borough - the highest award that can be bestowed in Barking and Dagenham to people who have made an outstanding contribution to the borough.

I am absolutely delighted to see Paul, Dora, Sandie and our very own Claire receiving the Freedom of the Borough, and I can’t think of four more deserving people

New Mayor appointed in Barking and Dagenham

Cllr Edna Fergus took over the reins from out-going Mayor, Cllr Peter Chand, at the annual ceremonial event last night (27 April) at an online Council Assembly meeting.

 

Cllr Fergus has been a resident of Barking and Dagenham for 31 years. Serving her local community as an elected member since 2014 representing Becontree Ward and in various roles including Deputy Chair of the Council’s Community Forums. She enjoys being a councillor, representing the borough and engaging with residents to learn about their hopes and dreams for the future.

Barking and Dagenham wins international Tree City award second year in a row

For the second year in a row Barking and Dagenham has joined cities worldwide including San Francisco, Washington DC and Barcelona, to be recognised as a ‘tree city of the world’.

The international programme celebrates cities across all continents that meet core standards for the care and planting of urban trees and forests.

Although not a city, Barking and Dagenham received the backing of the scheme’s organisers, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), along with the Arbor Day Foundation, to earn the global award.

Council set to fly the flag for St. George’s Day

During these difficult times, Barking and Dagenham Council hopes that its residents can find inspiration in the story of St. George, a national hero who overcame the odds to make the world a better place.

 

Normally celebrations would be happening in Barking Town Square with an event to bring the community together to celebrate St. George’s Day. But right now, everyone is still following government guidelines to keep each other safe.

Keep Britain Tidy report shows council cleaning up

An independent assessment from Keep Britain Tidy has shown that significant improvements have been made to the borough’s street cleanliness, despite challenging circumstances.

As part of our efforts to continue to improve our borough’s streets, in June 2020 the street cleansing service changed the way it operates, moving to an area-based approach to keeping the borough clean.

Cigarette tosser gets huge fine

A Barking smoker has been ordered to pay over £700 after he was caught dropping his cigarette on the floor.



During a routine foot patrol, Barking and Dagenham Council enforcement officers witnessed Mr Atrurs Daniluks dispose of his cigarette on the path outside Barking Station.



Officers approached Mr Daniluks and after introducing themselves and showing their IDs, they explained what they had seen and issued him with a Fixed Penalty Notice of £150.

Heathway hairdressers fined for failing to provide waste removal documents

A Dagenham hairdressing business has been ordered to pay almost £1,000 for failing to provide records that showed how it disposed of its waste.



Barking and Dagenham Council enforcement officers made a routine trade waste inspection at Michael Bernhard Ltd hairdressers on Wednesday 19 June 2019 to inspect their Waste Transfer Notes.



However, the owner of the Heathway hairdressers failed to do so, even after officers gave him a seven-day extension.
