Thousands of tonnes of garden waste collected through green bin service

A fortnightly collection service that sends grass cuttings to be composted has collected 2,971 tonnes of waste since launching two years ago – the equivalent weight of more than 234 London buses.

Our green garden waste service, which costs £40 per year, offers subscribers an eco-friendly way of disposing of their flowers and grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, weeds, leaves, and twigs.

There are currently 7,460 residents already signed-up to the scheme that runs from March to December each year.

Barking estate agent fined again for breaching rules

An estate agent in Barking and Dagenham has been fined for the third time in as many years – this time for failing to publicise its’ letting fees and information about its’ redress scheme online.

AMBI Investments Ltd, trading as Primelodge Estates, was found in breach of section 83 (1) of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and fined £5,000 at a hearing of the first-tier tribunal of the General Regulatory Chamber on Friday, 19 July.

Hooks Hall Pond brought back to life

Hooks Hall Pond in Dagenham’s Eastbrookend Country Park was given a new lease of life by the members of the London Community Rehabilitation Company (LCRC) to revitalise the area.

Eastbrookend’s Park Rangers were awarded funding to the sum of £2,000 from Tesco’s, Bags of Help scheme. This was used to purchase timber and other materials, to spruce up the area of Hooks Hall Pond.

Write On! is a new, quarterly magazine published by Pen to Print, a project ‘borne’ in Barking and Dagenham. Now coming up to its second issue, it is funded by the Barking and Dagenham Council and the Arts Council and links local writing communities into the publishing industry by showcasing the work of emerging writers.

Wembley wholesaler fined for supplying illegal cosmetics to Barking and Dagenham retailers

A Wembley-based business and its director have been ordered to pay almost £43,000 for supplying illegal cosmetics to retailers in Barking and Dagenham. 

Beauty Star Ltd, of Wembley Park Business Centre, and the company’s director Paul Harinder Singh were found guilty at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday, 19 July for importing and providing products that didn’t meet strict EU safety regulations.

NHS ‘MOT’ extended to pharmacies in Barking and Dagenham

A scheme offering free NHS ‘MOTs’ that help spot a range of health conditions has been extended to include eight additional venues in Barking and Dagenham.

The nationwide programme, which is available to people between the ages of 40 and 74 who do not have a pre-existing condition, offers the chance to have a health check-up intended to identify stroke, kidney and heart disease, type 2 diabetes or dementia.

Hunters Hall students join 400 strong choir

Pupils from a Barking and Dagenham school, Hunters Hall Primary, took part in the first ever Cbeebies Children’s Choir.

The event took place at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall last week when the pupils teamed up with schools from across the country and performed to an audience of over 5000 people.

Alongside Europe’s first black and minority ethnic orchestra: ‘Chineke’, the choir performed to the theme ‘A Musical Journey to the Moon’, a celebration of the 50 year anniversary since Neil Armstrong first set foot on earth’s natural satellite.

Come out to play for National Play Day

On Wednesday 7 August, Valence Park will be hosting National Play Day for children and families in Barking and Dagenham. 

Kicking off at 11am, there will be something for all children to get involved in at the FREE event including arts and crafts, soft play, inflatables, face painting and much more.
